Our Work
High School Helpers began as a personal response to a confusing admissions process and grew into a citywide mentorship network. By connecting students who’ve navigated selective enrollment with those preparing to apply, we transform lived experience into guidance, opportunity, and equitable access across Chicago.

01
Applying Without Guidance
As middle schoolers applying to selective enrollment high schools, we struggled through the complex process largely alone. We wished for guidance from someone who truly understood the journey. That experience planted the seed for what would become High School Helpers.
02
Seeing The Gap
After reaching Northside College Prep and other competitive schools, we encountered incredibly capable classmates from underrepresented neighborhoods. More importantly, we recognized countless talented students who never got the opportunity or guidance to apply. This disparity motivated us to take action and create change.

03
First Tutoring Program
We launched our first independent tutoring initiative at Jamieson Elementary School in our local community. Working directly with motivated students, we refined our peer mentorship approach and witnessed firsthand how guidance from recent applicants could transform students' confidence, preparation, and outcomes throughout the enrollment process.
04
Expanding HSH Citywide
Recognizing that one school wasn't enough, we formalized High School Helpers to expand our impact citywide. By creating a structured network connecting elementary chapters with high school chapters across Chicago, we could reach thousands of students who deserve the same opportunities we received.
